Legacy

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan social, environmental, and political activist who founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization[4]. Born in Nyeri, Kenya, Maathai was the first woman to obtain a PhD in East and Central Africa[2]. She founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, which encourages women to plant trees to combat deforestation and environmental degradation[2]. The organization has planted over 50 million trees to date[2]. In 2004, Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in environmental conservation and her commitment to democracy, human rights, and women’s rights[5].
