Legacy
Thabo Mbeki is a South African politician who served as the second president of South Africa from 1999 to 2008[1]. Born in Idutywa, Transkei (now South Africa), Mbeki was exposed to politics from a young age by his father, a longtime leader in the Eastern Cape African National Congress (ANC)[3]. He joined the ANC Youth League at the age of 14 and became active in student politics[4]. After South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994, Nelson Mandela chose Mbeki to be the first deputy president in the new Government of National Unity[4]. Mbeki later became the president of the African National Congress in 1997 and was elected as the President of South Africa in 1999[4]. His administration focused on the continuing transition from an apartheid state, halting the soaring crime rate, and combating the spread of AIDS in Africa[3].
