Legacy
Salem Poor was an American soldier who fought in the American Revolution[2]. Born into slavery in Massachusetts, he managed to save enough money to buy his freedom at the age of 22[2]. Poor joined the American cause in 1775 and re-enlisted in 1776, serving through the Battles of Monmouth and Saratoga, and spending the winter of 1777–78 with Washington’s army at Valley Forge[2]. His actions during the war were described as “conspicuously courageous”[4]. After the war, Poor faced challenges and struggles, but his service and bravery during the American Revolution have been recognized and celebrated[2].
