Legacy
Medgar Evers was an American civil rights activist and the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi[1]. He organized voter-registration efforts, economic boycotts, and investigated crimes perpetrated against Black people[1]. Evers was assassinated outside his Mississippi home in 1963[1]. His killer, Byron De La Beckwith, was sent to prison in 1994[2]. In 2017, President Barack Obama designated Evers’ home a national historic landmark[1]. The City University of New York named one of its campuses after the slain activist, and in 2009, the U.S. Navy bestowed his name on one of its vessels[1]. Evers’ legacy is celebrated through various institutions, including Medgar Evers College in central Brooklyn, which focuses on academic excellence and vibrant campus life[4].
