Legacy

Jomo Kenyatta was a Kenyan anti-colonial activist, revolutionary, political theorist, and politician who served as the first Prime Minister of Kenya from 1963 to 1964 and then as the country’s first President from 1964 to 1978[5]. Born in Ichaweri, British East Africa (now in Kenya), Kenyatta was a key figure in the struggle for Kenya’s independence from British colonial rule[2]. He played a significant role in the transformation of Kenya and led the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party from 1961 until his death[5]. Kenyatta’s policies expanded universal education, improved Kenya’s economy, and increased the birth rate and life expectancy[4].
