Early Life and Activism

H. Rap Brown joined the civil rights organization, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He became the Alabama project director in 1966 and the national director of SNCC after [Stokely Carmichael] in 1967. He was a leading proponent of the Black Power movement and a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement[1][4][5].

Brown faced legal troubles, including charges related to inciting a riot, violating the National Firearms Act, and armed robbery. He was imprisoned multiple times and served a five-year term in Attica State Prison. During his incarceration, he embraced Islam and changed his name to Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin[1][4][5].

Later Life

After his release, Al-Amin became a grocery store owner in Atlanta and a leader of the [National Ummah], one of America’s largest black Muslim groups. In 2000, he was convicted of murder for the shooting of two police officers and is currently serving a life sentence[5].
