Legacy

Samuel ‘Sam’ Sharpe is a National Hero of Jamaica, recognized for his leadership in the 1831 Baptist War slave rebellion[1][4]. He was a Baptist deacon and a successful landowner, who used his influence to fight for justice, fair treatment, and improved living conditions for the people of Jamaica[1][2][4][5]. Despite the violent aftermath of the rebellion, which led to his execution, Sharpe’s actions paved the way for significant social and economic reforms[5]. His face has been featured on the Jamaican $50 bill[4]. The Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College in the parish of his birth is named after him[4]. His legacy is celebrated annually on Sam Sharpe Day in Jamaica.
