Lewis Hayden was an African American leader who escaped from slavery in Kentucky and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. He and his wife Harriet Bell Hayden were noted for their work in the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves reach freedom, and for their contributions to the abolitionist movement. Hayden is also known for his association with John Brown and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first official African American units in the United States during the Civil War. After the war, Hayden served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
