Legacy

Léopold Sédar Senghor was a Senegalese poet, politician, and cultural theorist who served as the first President of Senegal from 1960 to 1980[1]. Born in Joal, Senegal, French West Africa (now in Senegal), Senghor was a major proponent of the concept of Negritude, which aimed to assert the value and dignity of African traditions and peoples[1]. He was also the first African member of the Académie Française[4]. As President, Senghor advocated a moderate “African socialism” and became an internationally respected spokesman for Africa and the Third World[2].
