Fela Kuti, also known as Fela Anikulapo Kuti, was a Nigerian musician, composer, and political activist renowned for pioneering the Afrobeat music genre. His music was characterized by a fusion of jazz, funk, Ghanaian highlife, and traditional Nigerian chants and rhythms. Fela was also known for his human rights activism and criticism of the Nigerian government, which led to numerous arrests and assaults on his commune, the Kalakuta Republic. He was the son of prominent feminist and nationalist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. Throughout his life, Fela faced significant government opposition and was a thorn in the side of the ruling elite due to his outspoken political views[1][2][3][4][5][6].
